Author, journalist, and former broadcaster Caroline Baum has created a new podcast ‘Life Sentences’ in which she talks to some of Australia’s best biographers. Both seasoned players and newcomers share their experience of navigating the often sensitive territory of biography in the search for the real story behind their subject’s life. Whether they are writing about famous or forgotten people, whether their version of events is authorised or unauthorised, biography is a high-stakes quest full of twists and turns.
In the first episode Caroline discusses with Cassandra Pybus the motives that informed Pybus’s biography of Truganini. In episode two Mark Mordue talks about his own mental health crisis while writing about Nick Cave. Other podcasts include Helen Ennis on Olive Cotton, Jacqueline Kent discusses her biography of Vida Goldstein, and Patrick Mullins talks about his work on William McMahon.
The podcasts are being released every Monday from 29th of March for eight weeks, and run for around 40 minutes.
A second series is in the planning stages for release in the second half of the year.
